The original Pira shelf, designed in 1954, reflected the unique duality of its creator, Olle Pira (1927-2018). Pira, a master cabinet-maker, was adept in traditional woodworking techniques, crafting pieces from cherry, maple, and matured oak with time-honored skill. Despite his traditional craftsmanship, Pira also embraced modernity and innovation. He secured a place at Konstfack, Sweden's prestigious school of art, craft, and design, known for pioneering avant-garde concepts. Pira's talent and forward-thinking vision were further recognized when he became the first Swede to win a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1952.

The Pira G2 shelf system is manufactured exclusively from high end materials; the shelves are made of lacquered steel sheets and the poles of extruded aluminium which emphasise the solid look; the cabinets and bookends have the options of walnut or white oak, where the wood brings warmth and creates a contrast to the lacquered metal.
