Plastic Armchairs were first presented as part of a New York Museum of Modern Art International competition, "Low Cost Furniture Design". Their design owns second prize. Despite the success of this new generation of Plastic Chairs, Vitra never lost interest in the original material and continued to monitor advancements in fiberglass production methods.

The so-called Eiffel Tower base of the DSR chair (Dining Height Side Chair Rod Base), an intricate and graceful construction made of steel wire, combines light, elegant forms with structural strength.

Now referred to as ‘The Chair of a Century’, the DSR Chair’s shell displays the characteristic irregular surface of fibreglass, which appears almost like a natural material thanks to its clearly visible fibres.

An organic yet contemporary form, the seat rests upon a striking chromed wire ‘Eiffel’ base with cross struts and features rubber shock mounts to support longer periods of sitting down. In continual development for the modern user, Vitra has revised the geometry of the seat to achieve optimum ergonomics and comfort.
